There used to be a time when communities were close. People cared for each other and everyone was expected to take part in community affairs and activities. Those days are gone, unfortunately and people now seem to care only about themselves. So many people live lonely lives amid crowds of people and it is especially young people that suffer from the lack of a true community spirit. Thankfully, there are organizations that offer programs aiming at helping the youth of Chicago.
One of the main reasons why there are so many desperately needy young people is the fact that so many families have become dysfunctional. Children are no longer treasured and cared for. Everyone is too busy. Kids are left on their own and they are not given the encouragement, love and acceptance that is so vital to them. So they look for acceptance and help elsewhere, often at the wrong places and with the wrong people.
Sadly, unemployment is extremely high and numerous young people simply cannot find jobs after completing school. Many others drop out early, because they have lost hope in the future. Such young people do not have any skills to offer potential employers. Some organizations have seen this trend and are offering young people training courses that may help them to gain jobs, to bolster their sense of self worth.
When youngsters become disillusioned in society they are in grave danger of developing psychological and behavioral problems. They lose their self respect, feel as if they are worthless and they often develop depression and experience high levels of anxiety. Thankfully, many churches and other organizations offer counseling to such young people, creating a place where they feel care for, loved, respected and accepted as worthwhile individuals.
Sadly, drug abuse and alcoholism is on the rise among young people. They abuse substances to escape from the harsh reality and to forget about their troubles for a while. Unfortunately, substance abuse often leads to criminal behavior. Some programs aiming to help young people offer rehabilitation programs, but it is very difficult to convince young addicts that they need help. The success rate is disappointingly low.
One of the main problems experienced by well meaning organizations aiming to help young people is the fact that it is so difficult to reach them. This is often because so many of them are homeless and so they drift from place to place. That is why some organizations have set up places of safety where young people can sleep and get a decent meal. Such places allow other organizations to reach them.
The sad fact is that very few young people in desperate need can be reached and helped. There are just too few resources. Too few people volunteer their services, offer donations or become involved. Many organizations trying to help young people are continually short of everything. This means that only a fraction of those in desperate need can be reached and assisted.
If society as a whole ignores the desperate light of young people in trouble it does so at its own detriment. It is the duty of every person, organization and authority to do whatever is possible to secure the safety, security and future of the youngsters of society. The alternative is too ghastly to contemplate.
