Do not take it by mouth. This is one of the many essential oils that should never be swallowed. Despite of what it's called, it does not come from the same plant that yields black, green and other types of teas. According to experts, it's something that is toxic to humans. Commonly reported problems upon ingesting it include formation of rash, confusion, unsteadiness and even coma. By the way, it's also highly toxic to pets when taken internally.

Dilute it with carrier oil beforehand. Due to the fact that it's so powerful and concentrated, it has to be weakened with carrier oil first. For different needs, there are varying dilution recipes. As a general rule of thumb, you should weaken it by combining 1 to 2 drops of it with a teaspoon of almond oil, olive oil, coconut oil or any other carrier oil of your liking.

Do a skin patch test in order to be sure. About 24 hours prior to its application, figure out if you will develop any unwanted reaction. A little diluted tea tree oil should be dabbed behind your ear or on the inside part of your elbow. Allow the day to pass. If you see some redness or pimple like growths or experience itchiness, it only means that you're allergic to it. Wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. It goes without saying that you should never apply it anywhere.

Check that it's not expired. Prior to diluting and applying, see to it that the product is not yet expired. Using something that's already expired can leave you with severe skin reactions. When stored properly, it can last for up to 2 long years. Similarly, you should skip using it if it's already oxidized, which means that it has been exposed to the elements for quite some time.

Do not give it to a teenage boy. Scientists say that it should not be applied on the skin of young boys. That's because hormonal disruption may take place. Such can trigger the formation of breasts in males, which is referred to as gynecomastia in the medical community.

Let your doctor know that you are thinking about using it. Generally, it is safe for use on pregnant and breastfeeding moms. Since everyone is different, see to it that you ask your doctor first if it's fine for you to use it. The same should be done if you are diagnosed with a medical condition to keep complications at bay.

There is no denying that tea tree oil is one of the most potent and beneficial essential oils out there. However, it's important that it is used correctly. By keeping the above pieces of information in mind, unwanted issues can be avoided.
