Cognitive Therapies And Failure To Launch Anxiety Syndrome

By Ronald Olson

Children whom suffer from anxiety, ADHD and other emotional issues often have a hard time functioning. The same goes for young adults as when children reach a certain age, it can still be hard to function on a daily basis. In most cases, those having these problems are suffering from Failure to Launch Anxiety Syndrome.

In most cases, studies have shown that cognitive treatments are best when dealing with this syndrome. Young adults are often treated for these issues based on improvement of the syndrome. In most cases, a diagnostic manual provides information as to different signs of improvement. While this is the case, there are other issues which need be considered when diagnosing or reviewing these cases.

In doing so, it is important to consider whether or not an individual feels happier, has created a connection to the larger world and knows the difference between imagination and reality. If so, by using a cognitive approach, many of these individuals can eventually leave home, do grocery shopping, take a bus and go to school or work.

Family and loved ones can often be integral when working with these individuals. For, love and acceptance go a long way in helping an individual become more self-aware, self-confident and self-sufficient. Whereas, having these connections can also help build a resistance to procrastination. While this is the case, if the individual has other disabilities which are debilitating, it is important to consider these issues when developing and providing treatment options.

While psychotherapy can often be helpful, it is not always enough for some individuals. When this is the case, there can often be a need for ongoing therapies and medication. When medication is required, it is important to update professionals on any changes in lifestyle. For example, when going from being housebound to going out in public. For, a change in medication might be necessary based on anxiety levels which can often change when this is case.

It is important that these individuals have a chaperon when going out of the house whether to get the mail, shop or attend events. For, after having been housebound for such a long time, going out for any reason can often be overwhelming. Whereas, when going to public locations or events, it is also important to advise these individuals how to handle crowds, lines and other factors before leaving home.

If going outside or leaving home and the individual becomes overwhelmed with anxiety, it is important to turn back. For, while many suffering from this condition can do so, it is not the case for everyone. As such, it is important to recognize and support the needs of those suffering from anxiety at any given time.

While the cognitive approach can benefit some, this is not always the case. In many cases, it is a matter of whether or not an individual can resolve attachments associated with the mind which are inhibiting the individual from moving forward. In most cases, when an individual is suffering anxiety due to post traumatic stress disorder or severe mental illness, improvement can be much harder than for others.
